We're all longing to entertain again right? But for a lot of people, the purse strings are a bit tighter post COVID. Champagne is the ultimate in celebration drinks but it does come at a cost, and with so many sparkling alternatives available, you don't actually need to splash the cash to feel special.

Affordable alternatives to champagne

I've gathered together 3 affordable alternatives to champagne that are ideal for a party, wedding or to celebrate at home on your own!

1. Chandon Brut NV

This sparkling wine is made by Moet and Chandon (heard of them?) but in Argentina.

It. is. divine. Made with the traditional method and using the classic champagne grapes of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, it has a very fine bead (bubbles) and tastes a heck of a lot more expensive than it is. It is also a vegetarian wine. Get it from Waitrose for £17.99 (but often on special offer) here.

2. Cave de Turckheim Cremant D'Alsace

Not far from Champagne in France (the region where Champagne is made and named after) is Alsace. Here, they make sparkling wine too and it is called Cremant. It is made with Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris grapes using the traditional method. Delicious and much more affordable, it is also French so will hush any snobs amongst the group who have an allergy to anything other than old world wine. Buy it here for £13.49 and enjoy as an aperitif, with buffet food or even with dessert.

3. Lindauer Special Reserve Brut Cuvée NV

Now we go back to the southern hemisphere to New Zealand where they have certainly been doing well on the wine making front. This bubbly has become my family's 'house' sparkling, my dad will order it en masse whenever we have a gathering and it also comes in pink (rose) if you prefer that or want some variation. Again, it is a blend of the traditional champagne grapes Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. At £13.99 it is a perfect affordable alternative to champagne for weddings

Now if you don't mind, I'm off to enjoy a glass of the Chandon Brut in the sunshine...
